Every summer in Japan the Studio Ghibli classic Castle in the Sky is broadcast on TV. Without giving out too much information, for those that haven’t seen it, during the climatic scene an important phrase is screamed out, “Balse”!
When the movie plays on TV everyone tweets, or posts this cry online. In the past this has shattered the tweet per second record tripling the number formerly held by Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement, and actually slows down Internet speeds as it strains under the weight of the sudden flood of data.
It’s actually kind of interesting, and scary, as I’m hoping that no one in Tokyo wants this fair city to repeat the fate of the floating city of Laputa yet sometime tonight hundreds of thousands of people will cry out, “Balse!” in cyber space

Interestingly impressive. This is far and away one of my favorite movies of all time for so many reasons. I first saw it in the 80’s on laser disk and I was stunned to silence with its sheer awesomeness. I love pretty much all of his material but this one and Porco Rosso are my favorites. I spent about 5 hours in the Miazaki museum in Japan when I was there. That part of the movie (Balse!), gives me goosebumps just thinking about it let alone when watching the movie.
“Balse!”
“My eyes!!!”
Very interesting. Ghibli does good stuff. Sounds like it is time to watch castle in the sky again, haven’t seen it in years. Maybe some day I can take my pen pal to the Miazaki museum. Well, mixed a cranberry and gin and its about time to go play some R-Type.
Oh, was looking up pictures of Yakuza skins today and found a black and white one. Apparently the practice of removing the skin and sending it back to the artist after the canvas has died is an older practice than I had figured. You should do an article about this practice if you already haven’t. They just remove the art and dry the skin and there you go, a masterpiece on display.
I mean a black and white picture of a skin. Not sure if the tattoo was black and white.
