One of the big culture shocks in Japan is the state of the, “Stylish” Japanese male: 80s hair, effeminate, and with a suit straight out of a manga comic. Of course not all do but a lot of women see these guys as the be all and end all of the male species. Some of the attraction is of course based on the manga culture which idolizes this style while other Japanese women are attracted to, what I call the, “effeminate pimp look” because they see these impeccably dressed guys as the closest they will ever get to a loving relationship. These manga men represent the fantasy of not a big percentage wise but still ALOT of women living in a culture where everything is defined by cuteness. The extreme of this cuteness is the Japanese Host.
The Japanese Host is the male counterpart to the hostess, which is a girl who for money will provide company to a guy. Yes, in Japan there is a huge industry that caters to women. Western women listen up! You too can pay hundreds of dollars to have a guy be attentive, treat you like a princess and pour your drinks.
Q – So are Japanese women so desperate that they have to pay men to pour them drinks … and more?
While I’m sure some women do pay for this service the industry is for the most part totally supported by girls from the, “entertainment” industry. Hostess girls, glory hole girls, all the way up to full out call girls take a large portion of the money they make doing whatever things a salary man desires and spend it on getting wasted with a charming, non-threatening, guy in very expensive suit.

I often find myself at a loss for words when I am approached by a host at 5 in the morning and being invited into his bar for 2000Yen (roughly $225) bottles of champagne.

The funny thing is that neither the hair styles nor the suits nor even the ties have really changed all that much in a decade. I used to relax at random corners in busy markets and watch the hosts and touts in those thin shiny suits try to attract girl after girl. It was all very entertaining and a good way to pass a couple hours.
Men paying to spend time with women I can understand. But women paying to spend time with men? Whhhaaaaaaat? Oh Japan, you so crazy. Seems they don’t even want to have sex, quite the opposite they generally seem to want a man who wont try to have sex with them for a change.
Maybe if gaijinass needs more money he could take out an ad in a paper. “I am handsome and I will wear nice clothes and take you out but I promise not to try and have sex with you. 20,000 yen.” Lulz.
GaijinAss has done this already….without the “I promise not to try and have sex with you” in fact it was 180 degrees the other way. It worked.
I have even read about host clubs hiring women to dress as hosts. They are more atentive to the women, know how a woman thinks and so what she wants and far less likely to sleep with the clients, or even try to.
I would be so happy to just hold hands with a Japanese woman. In fact there was this series of dreams I had that were the greatest dreams I ever had. This Japanese woman (always the same one) would slowly and shyly approach me looking at the ground and then reach out and grab my hand and just hold it. The last one she hugged me. I haven’t dreamt of her since. I would give so much to get those dreams again. I would always wake up with my heart racing feeling so happy. Actually happy. ……time for more f’n merlot

I’ve seen a club like that in Shinjuku with a bunch of girls dressed like men. I don’t know how common it is though.
Yeah from what I read it was just starting out and a few places were having a lot of sucess with it so far. It didn’t sound like it was a very common thing. Interesting though, has its good points. Wonder if a guy could visit one of these females-dressed-as-a-male host clubs to study up for dating advice and what not. I bet as long as the guy/guest kept buying drinks the female/male host would keep talking.
The one place I’ve seen has been around for years but I don’t think its girls dressing up as guys it’s actually post-op transexuals (Called New-Halves in Japan) or girls who went under the knife to become guys. I’ll try and snap a picture next time I’m in Shinjuku.
This was women being chosen for their experience as women. Then dressed as men, rather convincingly. Trannies, regular cross dressers (not doing it as a job uniform but as a lifestyle choise instead) and women working towards becoming men! Thats way more interesting! Gimme pics!
It is one aspect of Japan I have not found out much about other than that manga of chics with D!(&$. Forgot the name of it at this moment. I have seen cross dressers and trannys from Thailand and wow they are good at it. I have also seen this ongoing net meme called cross dresser of the month, BUT JAPANESE WOMEN JUST WOW! I wonder what the psychological motivations are? Can you ask them? This is so interesting.

Omg yes! Your speaking my language. I am not a huge wrestling fan really. Infact I quit watching it with my friends. I quit because I saw a Japanese death match dvd and omg it is so bloody.
Yeah pro wrestling is fake to the point of lowering its viewers I.Q.’s. Blood sport is a human tradition though. The Japanese dvd’s I ended up getting had so much blood I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.
The most violent matches were the women. Still, even if Gaea girls isn’t bloody its Japanese women wrestling. That in and of itself is worth it. If it is documentary then I can study the psychological motives for a Japanese woman to get into wrestling and what societies thoughts of it are and how they have affected her life.
So yeah, this double feature dvd sounds like a must purchase. Now I gotta scrape the money together. I am so glad you told me about these movies. Thanks Yos.

Okay here is the situation. My favorite Pen pals birthday is coming up. It is the twenty ninth. She is amazing. So I want to get something that will impress her and show her I like her.
I am a college student. I live in my parents basement. So funds are limited. Yeah, she knows my situation and it doesn’t bother her at all, if anything she acts worried about me and encourages me to keep my spirits up. Also, she live in Japan (Hokkaido area) and I live in the states.

Japanese women are a diverse species man. Couldn’t tell ya. Although she obviously is interested in foreign things as she is your penpal. Anything from your local? That would be interesting? Even just candy might be fun. For example they don’t have Twizzlers

Well I have sent her photos and brochures from my area. She actually said from the photos, brochures and my letters she feels as though she has traveled here. It is like she can imagine being here with me she said.

She always seems to like what I say or send and never seems to get angry, or offended. She is very understanding of the differences in our cultures and does not expect me to act different for her. She is quickly accepting of the way American culture tends to handle things.
She has sent me pictures of her house and joked around with me through email in ways that show she is comfortable with me. She always seems to know what I am thinking, which is kind of weird, but in a good way. She doesn’t mind my faults and seems to deal with them instantly and in a way that shows they dont bother her and shouldnt bother me. She is just so relaxing to me and she is very intellegent.
I have always had a thing for smart women. Anyway I am all thumbs when it comes to love, relationships and anything like that. Yes I realize all women are different, but I also realize a little advice can help when your so lacking in the talking to the opposite sex area. I always just did better at the entire sex thing, it is everything before that that gives me trouble.
Suki or Daisuki just mean “I like you” its not like you’re pledging your undying love or anything. Those would be acceptable.
As for the present if you’re going with food then stick to candy as most Japanese candy isn’t sweet. So anything sweet in America they don’t have here. I’d just buy one of everything and send a big package. Oh it would be a trip to see “Nerds” again.

The email she sent me today was so amazing. She said I did not have to send her a gift as she already has my warm heart.
I am used to being called things like a soulless monster by friends and family so that email she sent still has me feeling light headed and giddy.
Yes I am using my brain when it comes to this pen pal. I realize most people confuse the nervessnous of a new relationship, those butterflys in the stomach, with love. I am actually paying attention to the type of person she is and compatibility and all that. I also realize that if this one doesn’t work out I can just keep looking. Still it is an amazing feeling.
I was worried cause I know that Japanese tend to take those words more seriously than westerners. The third word, That I didnt type, is almost never said. The one that professes love. Although, I have heard that the younger gernerations Say it more. The phrases ‘I like you’ ‘I like you very much’ and ‘I Love you’ don’t even show up in my Japanese to English type books, or the audio cd’s, or the computer program.
I had to search all over the net till I ran across an article, that put it like this ‘The Japanese don’t say those kind of things much, they prefer to show it instead. They may not show it in public the way westerners do, they instead do things for the other person and get gifts and so on.’ The real shocking part was the article said that ‘Most Japanese people never say I love you. ‘They reserve it for when someone is in the hospital for something serious. They seem to have no problem saying it in English as it is said all the time in western movies, this gives the impression that it has less meaning in English. Westerners will even say it over silly things like food.’
The article was written by Japanese couples and couples where one was Japanese and the other was a gaijin. It was a very interesting article. Still it could have been older Japanese people, small country town types, a particular area, or even just people raised differently. There were a lot of different people though.
Article may not be the right word. It was an question posted on a Japanese travel and pen pal site. The answers flooded in from Japan, and a few from other places. It went on for a few years, the answers, till the site turned off replies to it.
