A couple of things have been popping up on my radar recently. The first is that Laurence Fishburne’s daughter is releasing a sex tape in hopes it will jump start her acting career. That’s Laurence Fishburne … as in Morpheus from The Matrix … as in Morpheus’ 19-year old daughter is breaking into porn because in her mind (and this is a real quote) “I view making this movie as an important first step in my career.”
The second thing that has been coming up is the plot of The Entourage has Vince dating Sasha Grey who basically plays herself: A porn star who has broken through to the mainstream with the movie The Girlfriend Experience which was directed by Steven Soderbergh.
Has the magical time of porn stars being able to cross over to the mainstream arrived? After the break through 1972 movie Deep Throat, porn went through a period where it and its stars went mainstream, a short time in history that is labelled “porn chic”.
But it only lasted a brief time before puritan America cracked down forever black listing those attached with porn and even arresting some of the cast of Deep Throat. Male porn star legend Ron Jeremy has for years trying to make it legit but hasn’t been able to dump his porn stigma. He’s been filmed in countless mainstream films but always is cut by the studios who are afraid their films’ ratings being affected by his presence.
Now you could say Paris Hilton was the first to break through with her sex tape, One night in Paris but she was already a “star” through her jet set status and her reality show The Simple Life. Even Kim Kardashian was famous before her sex tape came out. And both of these tapes were “accidentally” released.
Other than Sasha (Who’s mainstream career hasn’t gone anywhere after Soderbergh‘s film) The daughter of the Matrix, Montana Fishburne, is the first person I’ve heard of who actually believes that putting out a porn video will launch her career into a respectable position. But who knows, stranger things have happened.
