Annabel Chong had a dream, a dream to liberate women from crushing slut stereotypes. She viewed women as cursed by the “easy women” label for having more than 10 partners, Annabel thought that if she could push the amount of sex partners a slut has had, it would bring in thousands of women lost in the loose girls hinterlands. She wanted to reposition the promiscuous female, recasting “the slut” as “the stud.” Her quest was captured on the wonderfully named, World’s Biggest Gang Bang. A porn title that would go on to become the highest selling XXX movie and spark the creation of a documentary of her struggle, Sex: The Annabel Chong Story (nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance).
But she wasn’t always the feminist crusader, Chong (Real name Grace Quek) was born 1972 in Singapore one of the strictest places to live in the world (they don’t even allow chewing gum, the Nazis)! A gifted student she finished high school in Singapore in the top percent of her class and went to America to study law. Needing some extra money she interviewed at a model agency run by one John T. Bone (The name sadly is real). She joined the agency either because she was intrigued by the money, or was maybe overcome by Bone’s boyish charms. Whatever the reason, she became an adult film star and soon bone had her in such classics as Sgt. Pecker’s Lonely Hearts Club Gangbang and I Can’t Believe I Did the Whole Team (A tear jerker I’m sure). Chong justified her new found stardom by telling her friends she was blurring the boundary between pornography and performance art. It was at this point that she decided to move from performance art to the next step, women’s activism.

So embarking on her self sacrificing crusade she set about creating and starring in the world’s largest gangbang. When it was all over the final tally was 251 sex acts with 70 different men over a period of 10 hours (The last man was porn legend Ron Jeremy). It should have been the happy ending that everyone wanted. Chong would liberate women by becoming the ultimate slut through the sacrifice of her body and the porn world would get a best selling title. Everybody would join hands in a mutually satisfying circle jerk of good karma.
However as revealed in the movie her gangbang didn’t exactly start a numbers revolution, she didn’t liberate the sluts, the producers behind the movie ripped her off, and to top it all off the success of the movie sparked a whole gangbang genre that exploited rather than advanced women’s rights. As a guy who likes naked hot bodies as much as the next guy you want to believe that porn is something more than the wholesale exploitation of women. That women are somehow empowering themselves by using their bodies how they see fit, which is what women fought for in the first place no? Using your body how you want without society exiling you in shame is what any true feminist will tell you is their goal. Yet as the documentary shows the porn world is set up to exploit. Chong’s odyssey couldn’t have been planned better to display porn, and Chong’s lofty if naive goals, as further degrading women everywhere.

The reason porn degrades women is because so many people think porn is degrading, when really it can be a perfectly respectable career. I blame twisted religious “values”, immature childish attitudes towards sex as being “naughty and bad”, and people who love to poke fingers at others to feel better about themselves.

My first interaction with porn was coming home from a summer trip (I was four)and seeing it on the television, thanks dad, I still don’t remember any of it, but my parents do. I guess I was stuck there staring at the television as my parents freaked out and scrambled to shut it off. This followed by my dad and mom fighting because she came home from the trip with me early.
Then there was always the huge shelf of porn in black vhs cases. Later in the sixth grade the shed full of playboys one of my friends found and would always be looking at. Then the other friend whos mom worked at a porno store. My friend would drag me there all the time to borrow money from his mom and I would just set there staring at the giant jar full of dick shaped erasers. Seriously who buys dick shaped erasers?
I could go on and on but it really just gets weird past this point. Oh and yes a very surprising amount of women watch porn. Many of them seem more obsessed than a hormone crazed teen male.
